Born in Jerusalem, Khalil Tafakji has travelled the length and breadth of the original Palestine for thirty years, and has mapped the colonization of the territories since the creation of Israel in 1948 and the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. The geographer from Jerusalem tells its story and, through his maps, that of the Israeli colonization.
extract:
“‘Can we draw a new map of Palestine?’ Fayçal el-Husseini asked me when I joined the Arab Scientific Association in 1983. Fayçal, with whom I was to develop a close friendship, had trained as an officer. He had never fought, but wanted to create an operations room”. It was in Orient House, in Jerusalem. For the Palestinians, Orient was more than a clandestine municipality. It was the resistance.
When I met Fayçal, we had a vision of the future. We thought that we would have a State and were developing its institutions. We had realized that we would need maps, with which to confront Israel. For three years, we had long, often tense discussions with the Israelis, both before and after the Oslo Accord. I was a member of the Palestinian team and was the team cartographer, an ordinary technician.”
