“How can a young filmmaker of 43, who has just seen worldwide success with his last film, be sinking into the demeaning state that people call depression?” This is the question Federico Fellini asks himself as he prepares to direct his eighth feature-length film, 8 ½.
The idea for the film seemed great at first, but now that the monster that is the material and financial machine is running at full tilt, he’s no longer sure of anything. Everyone is chewing him out: his script is poor, incoherent, just plain bad!
Fellini is overwhelmed with anxiety and passes out. He is prescribed a thermal cure, giving him an opportunity to pause and reflect on what he’s created, but also his lovers and his life. His mistress joins him. Then he meets Claudia Cardinale, who is so perfect, so divine! And then his emotionally unstable but deeply touching wife arrives as well…
Finally, the film crew comes together. Time is running out, the producer keeps demanding to know how things are going, the actors want to know what roles they are playing, the sets need to be built… If only Fellini knew what he wanted to do! He wakes up from nightmares in a cold sweat… Will he manage to avoid disaster?
