"A delicious autobiography"

Le Point

A famous writer relates to a journalist the imagined novel of his life. At first he is reticent, but more and more easily he reveals himself, confiding to the journalist in such a manner that reality and imagination are inseparable. The writer blends his personal history with the history of the past century, in so doing he embraces an era and recounts a tale much larger than himself. After the war, after a first love and a first assignment with an illustrious ambassador our protagonist leaves to accept a teaching position in an American university where he meets two women who will change the course of his life. Lea is a polish Jew while Marie, whose brother was executed at the Liberation, is French. These women are the strands that run through love stories past and present. The affirmation of human vanity and the strength of ideas mixes with the unfolding of historical events and thoughts on political intellectual and emotional life.

The novel, in its essence is a reflection of its title; existence is tragic yet beautiful. Things of value are books and love as hope lifts us up and memory consoles us.
