Autumn, 1193. Having saved a boy fleeing his kidnappers from drowning, Guilhem d’Ussel
discovers that the boy is the future Count of Brionne, who represents a threat to the plans of Prince John, the brother of the Duke of Normandy, Richard the Lionheart.

Retained to protect the child, Ussel walks into an ambush and is left for dead. Outlaws, among them the pretty Alissende, come to his rescue and offer him refuge in their community.

But after launching an attack on Bec Abbey and giving those who ambushed him a bloody nose, he becomes an outlaw himself whom even Lambert de Cadoc, a mercenary in the service of the King of France who has taken him in, can no longer protect.

Imprisoned and sentenced to the gallows, the young knight soon learns the truth about his enemies and also where the treasure of the lords of Brionne is hidden. Can he escape from the gallows and persuade Cadoc to help him?
