How is science created and how do we decide where its truth lies? Is scientific knowledge intertwined with the ideologies of its time? How does its dissemination produce statements that can be used for political purposes? These questions are a common thread in these essays that focus mainly on Étienne Balibar’s relationship with the French philosophy of his time.

The second volume of Étienne Balibar ‘s essays is made up of nine philosophical discussions of classical and modern authors (Canguilhem, Badiou, Pascal, Machiavel, Marx, Foucault and Althusser, among others). It considers the questions of scientific knowledge, of political bias and its effect on knowledge and of the status of theory between theological speculation and the interpretation of current affairs.
These discussions, written between 1990 and 2016 illustrate the author’s evolution from a historical, critical approach to the philosophy of science to the phenomenology of pronouncements of the truth.
