One morning he happens upon a young girl on a rusty iron footbridge. Her eyes are blank, and she looks as though she is going to throw herself in front of the next train. Despite being used to solitude, he decides to help her and baptises her Muette, because she doesn’t utter a word. He
knows absolutely nothing about the little girl, who seems to have lost her memory, but when he glimpses a scar on her back, Nemo suspects that she has undergone a major kidney operation.

In Paris, surgeon Gilles Patrick is no longer sleeping at night. For the last few weeks, a gang of men has been persecuting him and his family and forcing him to commit unimaginable breaches of medical ethics: while a revolver is held to the temples of his wife anddaughter, he is forcibly taken to an unknown destination and made to operate on young patients who are perfectly healthy.

In Nice, the young Élodie cannot lead the normal life of a teenager. Suffering from a serious illness, she has to have dialysis every day, which tires her out and cuts her off from the rest of the world. Because of her blood group, her chances of finding a kidney donor through the usual channels are virtually nil… But her parents are determined to save the life of their only daughter and her father, who is the head of a financial establishment, has heard of parallel networks for obtaining healthy organs from willing donors.

These people don’t yet know that their paths will cross and that when confronted with the appalling and abject truth, they will have to go through hell without any guarantee of salvation.
