A debut novel set in America from a young French author. A hollow portrait of a post-Trump America in disarray, Atlantic City is also a universal novel about outcasts and an ode to the threads of chance woven throughout our lives.

One city: Atlantic City, New Jersey. One day: September 22, 2017. After a hurricane threatens the entire city—just a few years after Sandy that devastated a good part of the population—a new day starts at 7:55 a.m. with Clarence Gambino, a heavenly homeless man offering his tale to journalists in search of a scoop. He gets the ball rolling with a series of protagonists who will come and go, following each other, meeting, getting back together, with one character per chapter. We will meet Richard Cheer, a fuddy-duddy local radio host; a medical secretary who has been growing her nails for four years with the hope of making it into the Guinness Book of World Records; a humanist doctor ready to rob a bank to save his patients; a retired widower who travels daily to and from Newark to play poker in a casino but never takes the time to say hello to his grandchildren who live there; a high school girl who’s bored to death in the parking lot of Domino’s Pizza and whose only desire is to get out of the city; a couple of blind tourists taking a pushcart tour along the famous boardwalk; and a Beyoncé fan raising her daughter on her own. They are men, women, and children whose fates and backgrounds are quite different, but in whose stories one can glimpse the connections and interactions with each other as the novel progresses.
