The idea of a child dying because modern medicine couldn’t reach him was intolerable to a small group of men and women who were thus inspired to create the French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC) in Kabul.

The FMIC was built in 2005 to bring medicine and surgery of the 21st century to the children of an economically depressed and war-torn nation. In spite of the bombs, the attacks, the fanaticism, the corruption and the lack of money, this hospital saves the lives of thousands of children each year.

And it’s creation is thanks to a few Frenchmen, one of whom, Éric Cheysson, has become the hospital’s director.

His book is the story of an extraordinary humanitarian effort made possible by those who had the heart to fight for its creation. Cheysson’s story brings together the destinies of the journalists, artists, entrepreneurs and politicians who committed to giving life to a seemingly crazy idea.
