It has the color of ocre and sand, the scent of heaps of dried cow dung plastering the ground inside the campments, crunching under my feet. It has the warmth of the sun that dries the pastures and the freshness of the shadows along the rivers. It resonates with the mooing of the cattle and the nasal cries of the laughing birds. It is filled with the crackling sound of my ancestor’s camp fires and with the laughter of my cousins.  It’s name is Kaokoland.
Tulipamwe is born in Namibia, amongst the Himba. Her mother is indigenous whereas her father is a white special counselor attached to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Quai d’Orsay, which sent him on a mission to steer these « savages » towards independence and democracy. But he goes as quickly as he has arrived, leaving behind him the red earth along with his illegitimate child… Tulipamwe grows up in this territory she cherishes above all, and progressively learns to live with her double cultural heritage.
But soon, the construction of a dam menaces her people’s way of life. Will this be the moment, when Tulipamwe will choose to defend her cultural roots at any cost, risking even to unveil the secrets that will change the course of her existence?
All along her quest, she will be confronted with the atrocities of History, the genocides as well as the human experiments the Herero people had to endure at the hands of the Germans at the beginning of the XXth century….
Impregnated with magical realism,  Beacons is a magnificent, deeply human coming of age novel which offers a unique perspective and insight on a world menaced by extinction.
