Being a Christian in the Middle ages

Release date : 04/10/2018
How did a Christian in the Middle Ages live his faith?
Religion – we often forget – structured the life of medieval men
and women. The dogmas that governed the Christian faith were
essentially defined at the Council of Nicaea in 325. True pagan
practices have survived, but they have declined over the centuries.
And the Church managed to assimilate some by Christianizing old

Religion – we often forget – structured the life of medieval men
and women. The dogmas that governed the Christian faith were
essentially defined at the Council of Nicaea in 325. True pagan
practices have survived, but they have declined over the centuries.
And the Church managed to assimilate some by Christianizing old
festivals.
The author has chosen to follow a typical medieval Christian
throughout his life, from the baptism that cleansed him from
original sin, to the death that introduced him to the hereafter, where
he would obtain his reward or punishment. After his baptism, he
received a religious education, particularly from his mother, and
over the years, he would participate in collective practices, such
as attendance at Mass, and individual ones, such as receiving the
sacraments of the Eucharist, doing penance, marrying. He had to
respect Christian morality and follow its rules concerning sexuality,
money or behavior – not taking part in violence, for instance.
While dogmas – truths that must be believed because they are
revealed – do not change, practices or certain beliefs can undergo
transformation. Baptism by immersion had given way to baptism
by sprinkling. Purgatory, outlined by St Augustine, took on its full
meaning in the twelfth century and led to an escalation of masses
for the dead; these could shorten the time souls had to spend
there, and hence the flowering of indulgences.
Less free than we are to express their doubts about religion, more
susceptible to practices and rites (relics, miracles), the Christians
of the Middle Ages were often torn between the temptations of this
world during their lifetime and the fear of divine punishment at the
moment of their death.
