A dive into the Paris of the late nineteenth century, where we cross paths
with a number of emblematic characters including Gustave Eiffel and Guy
de Maupassant.

While Georges Du Roy, nicknamed Bel Ami, has just married with pomp
at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris, he begins to dream of a political
career. On the other side of the square stands the Bourbon palace, the
chamber of deputies. What if he, the big boss of the press, managed to
insinuate himself into the heart of the National Assembly, to – finally – be
as close as possible to the power?
To establish his ambitions, he does not hesitate to take up his cause
for a mammoth project whose success will not fail to reflect on him. As a
means to an end, he accepts the help of a mysterious financier, Siegfried
de Latour and his cousin, the bewitching Salomé. But are these two truly
well-intentioned?
After having submerged himself in the writing of Guy de Maupassant
and by choosing to give the leading role to women, Harold Cobert sketches
here a variation on a possible sequel to Maupassant’s masterpiece, Bel-Ami,
which is reminiscent of the vengeance of the Count of Monte-Cristo. By
entangling us in the political fights of the late nineteenth century, he offers
a cruel vision of the collusion between journalism, politics and finance. A
striking mirror of our time.
