I was four years old, maybe five, and I hated you immediately.” Thus opens Tatiana Vialle’s tale, addressed to the man who was her stepfather, Jean Carmet. Like many children, young Tatiana starts off hating this man who has come and taken her father’s place. He’s grouchy and strong-charactered, and she doesn’t want him in her life. At the time, his career as an actor is shaky: he is content with playing small roles in his friends’ films with unflattering publicity. He isn’t yet the giant of French cinema who successfully crossed popular comedy with classical theater. He’s just Jean. And she already had a father, named Paul. A theater actor and alcoholic, he appeared and disappeared in her life like the seasons, but he was nevertheless the one who brought her into the world.
Tatiana will grow up from being a shy little girl to an impulsive young woman, also drawn to an acting career. But Jean strongly disapproves, saying it’s not for her. But she persists. And goes from being a young woman to a mother, with her first child born from love but the marriage is too fragile to last.  Paul and Jean become grandfathers and Jean takes his role very seriously. Their bond strengthens, affection grows and when her mother Olga leaves Jean, he and Tatiana continue to see each other, without putting into words what they are for each other. And then Tatiana remakes her life with another man and is happy. Until the morning when, on the radio, she learns of Jean’s death. No one had informed her. She doesn’t believe it. Stunned with grief and shock, she returns to her childhood home to confront the harsh reality: he died and no one told her. Does she have the right to mourn his death?
