When she meets Pierre-Louis Sue de la Garde, she sees a solid husband who shares her religious values. They quickly marry in a traditional Catholic ceremony and move to Nantes. Her physical relations with Pierre-Louis are an ordeal, but their first heir is soon on the way. They plan to have five or six children, God willing. But what was a blessing turns into a journey full of trials and tribulations. Sixtine hates pregnancy, especially the way it makes her sick and alienates her from her own body. It is 2013, the year of the fight for marriage for all in France. Sixtine discovers her husband is fighting against this “sacrilegious” law with all the weapons in his arsenal: rosaries and crackdowns with the militia of the Brothers of the Cross. Meanwhile, her sister-in-law is trying in vain to complete a family tree for Sixtine’s child-to-be. It seems Sixtine’s mother, Muriel, lied to her daughter about her origins. After Sixtine’s son Adam is born, she escapes the control of the Sue de la Garde family and takes refuge in a village in the south of France. There, she discovers another world, far from the fear of sin. This apostate universe appears to hold another Truth. Through her encounters with Lydia, her neighbor who wears too much makeup; the modern Father Benjamin; Pawel, the non-conformist; and above all her own little Adam, the scales finally fall from her eyes.

With this debut novel, which reads like a psychological thriller, Maylis Adhémar speaks directly to the controlling influence a fundamental religious environment can have on a vulnerable young woman. This is also a story of awakening and emancipation.
