There are the accomplices of an African-American doctor who is alleged to be the author of an explosive tract – The Manifesto for Life. Hélène Morel, whose mixed-race grandson Julien has disappeared in the heart of Africa, is attending the trial. Five months earlier, Julien Morel, a United Nations employee, received a photo from one Joseph Klein which prompted him to travel to the heart of the equatorial forests in the hope of finding alive his mother and sister, who had officially been declared victims of the Rwandan genocide. The trial and Julien’s disappearance become inextricably linked.
As the weeks pass, Hélène establishes a rapport with Djany, a Congolese woman who is one of the accused and who knew her grandson. She recounts to her Julien’s slow and perilous journey up the River Congo. It is a story that could radically alter the outcome of the trial… Who is the true author of The Manifesto for Life which was the cause of this extreme violence? What was Julien’s role in this crazy project, one of whose aims was to drive all foreigners out of Africa, beginning with Westerners?
