De Gaulle and His Women

Release date : 07/11/2019
"There is no Charles " in de Gaulle’s memoirs, the French writer André Malraux once lamented. In contrast, this book could well be called "Charles and His Women," because it offers a new look at the General’s life by showing the important influence the women he knew had on his personality and his destiny.

Hundreds of books have been written about Charles de Gaulle, but they all elude one crucial topic: his relationships with women. Misconceptions abound as soon as the General’s relations with womankind are evoked, and his life narrative has been systematically biased as a result. Biographies cast his father as the more influential parent, yet his mother was the only one who believed in the angry kid who didn’t do as well as his brothers in middle school. She was also the one who convinced him of his great destiny. In the same way, his wife Yvonne is presented as an insignificant figure, when in fact she was already a superb young woman at the age of twenty when they met, and later served as the director of a foundation for thirty years. De Gaulle loved his wife for half a century, and when he dedicated his book to "Yvonne, without whom nothing would get done," he wasn’t simply using a polite expression.

The moral rectitude of the first president of France’s Fifth Republic has also led history to forget that, before his marriage, Lieutenant, then Capitan de Gaulle was very much a ladies’ man. And he even shared some of his conquests with Pétain… After twenty years of marriage, he even had an affair in London in 1940–affirmed by Resistance leader Pierre Brossolette. But it was a love he sacrificed for his sacred mission, his "contract with France."

Finally, the way in which he granted women’s right to vote and authorized the pill against the opinion of the Vatican contradict the phallocracy of which many have accused him.

After a great deal research and many interviews, this fascinating investigation reveals a warm and intimate facet of this man who is not only the commanding political figure whom we know so well.
