Poloniecka recalls how she survived the events of the war… along with her lasting memories of them.

“I cross myself and I do not believe; up to now, no one knows—should I be ashamed? I cross myself in secret—should I be ashamed? Ashamed to be a little girl who was hidden away, a little Jewish girl hidden away during the war, ashamed to continue making the sign of the cross that someone probably taught me, or that I learned by watching others.

I do it in the most seemingly ordinary circumstances, always alone, like when I’m at home and I can’t find  something, or sometimes when I’m waiting for something from someone who hasn’t arrived, just like I probably used to do openly as a little Jewish girl heading to mass, shoes in hand, at the church on Sunday morning, and who had been taught long ago that she had to forget she was Jewish, along with her name and her parents’ names, and who cried when the war ended, and someone, probably by her aunt who came to get her, told her that she was Jewish, because the Jews had killed baby Jesus.”
