The murder of Rebecca, the heiress to one of Mauritius’s wealthiest white families, sets off a series of events that risks destroying the multi-ethnic island’s fragile peace.

After she’s found dead, the police are quick to arrest Rebecca’s Hindu friend Raju. Devina, the Hindu servant that raised Rebecca like a daughter, knows Raju was set up and is determined to learn the truth. It’s obvious to her that Rebecca’s brother has the police and politicians in his pocket to cover up what really happened.

Attempts to stifle the case raise tension around the island, and Devina becomes a symbol of the people’s dismay. Politicians, businessmen, journalists, and religious leaders are helpless against the population’s mounting anger.

But eventually, as always on Mauritius, the people back down for fear of their anger becoming counterproductive. As Rebecca often said: “Living in this country forces one to always choose between lying in order to maintain peace and telling the truth which would lead to war.”

Once Devina discovers the truth, she chooses peace even though it means Rebecca’s murderer will go unpunished.
