From Occupied France to May ’68, the chaotic itinerary of a boy of the Cévennes
Samuel’s childhood took place under the Occupation, in the remotest part of the Cévennes countryside, in an unsophisticated and brutal rural community. Torn between the contradictory values of his pious mother—corseted in a castrating Protestant rigorism—and his Communist father, a member of the Resistance—flighty and uncompromising—the teen boy is stifled.... Samuel’s childhood took place under the Occupation, in the remotest part of the Cévennes countryside, in an unsophisticated and brutal rural community. Torn between the contradictory values of his pious mother—corseted in a castrating Protestant rigorism—and his Communist father, a member of the Resistance—flighty and uncompromising—the teen boy is stifled. Only the savage beauty of nature and the hours spent watching the flocks with little Nelly bring him some comfort. After the war, his father’s political engagement leads Samuel to exchange his life in the open air for the exhausting life of city dwellers in the closest town, Alès. Another world, another hell, the same misery. He will endure the dreadful fate of mine workers. At age twenty, Samuel finds himself a soldier in Algeria, enlisted in an unjust war he comes out of broken. In a profoundly changing world, the young man feels like nothing will ever change for him. Despite his disgust with humanity, he will rely on his hatred of injustice, his commitment to trade unions, as well as his unreserved love of reading in order to learn how to not be subjected to orders from others, whatever they might be, and to finally reconcile with life.
In the great tradition of naturalist writers such as Zola, Vallès, or Giono, Daniel Hébrard offers a harsh and difficult novel. With his colorful, descriptive language that renders the text extraordinarily vivid, he composes an uncompromising epic of the France that has disappeared today.
