Eugénie is a sad mermaid whose tears turn into diamonds when she cries. One night, when Igor is out on his boat, a storm hits and he is thrown into the icy water. Just when he thinks he’ll be swallowed up by the ocean, he is carried away in a bright whirlpool in Eugénie’s frail arms. Igor realizes that he has been waiting for Eugénie all his life. Eugénie feels that she has been hoping for Igor since the dawn of time. But Igor cannot live under the water, and Eugénie cannot breath out of water. So they promise each other to meet again one day. But how? They don’t know yet. Eugénie disappears in the depths of the ocean, leaving Igor safe, but alone. Now Igor has but one obsession: seeing Eugénie again. He decides to spend all his time throwing out his fishing lines, nets, and hooks. He catches hundreds of fish, but never his mermaid. Every day, a bigger crowd awaits Igor on shore to show their admiration, and soon all the fishermen follow him so that they can fish at his side. Thousands of fish find themselves trapped in the fishermen’s nets. Eugénie powerlessly watches all her friends die as they become prisoners of the mesh, and she cries with grief. But the more she cries, the more the ocean sparkles like diamonds. The more she grieves, the happier the fishermen become. Eugénie has to leave the water to stop this massacre. She has no other choice but to transform herself in order to survive
