The idea of explorers heading off in search of savage lands, putting their lives in danger in order to discover unseen worlds and bring back new knowledge, seems to belong to a bygone era. We feel like we know everything about our world. Yet no one can determine with certainty what tomorrow’s realities or societies will be like. One thing is certain: we will have to change in order to adapt to the future. We will have to live in landscapes that will probably be quite different from those we know today and discover new worlds—physical, economic, moral, and societal—if we want to live to see tomorrow. Who will be the pioneers and trailblazers of these new paths? In a world that no longer considers it worth the time and risk to train explorers, who are the explorers of today? Without these men and women who are ready to risk their lives in the service of new knowledge, the paths to the future would never be opened. Tomorrow’s explorers must also be careful to not repeat the mistakes of the past as they consider possible applications for their discoveries. Otherwise, future exploration could lead to the end of humanity, and indeed all life as we know it.
