With the Communists attacking almost every day, the bourgeois collaborators are scared and print a letter in the newspaper asking the government for weapons to defend themselves. The population, weakened by the increasingly severe restrictions, dread the coming winter and anxiously await an Allied landing that still hasn’t come. The Occupation Forces are nervous; the Gestapo is on high alert. An important Nazi dignitary, SS Colonel Julius Ritter, was assassinated as he was leaving his home near the Trocadéro. Meanwhile, in his little apartment, Inspector Léon Sadorski is still hiding the Jewish teenage girl Julie Odwak whom he impregnated (at the end of the previous book), putting him in a difficult situation. Yvette, Sadorski’s wife, who doesn’t know who the father is, must now pretend to be pregnant in order to avoid the    neighbors’ curiosity once the child is born. The Gestapo summons Sadorski to lead small group of French Gestapo policemen charged with tracking down Jewish “terrorists” in the FTP-MOI Resistance group—what History will come to know as the Manouchian Group.
At the same time, Sadorski, a manipulative sex maniac, has fallen under the youthful charm of Jacqueline Perret, a high schooler from Paris’s beaux quartiers and Julie’s best friend. (Jacqueline is also the heroine of The Defeat, which takes place three years earlier in June 1940.) In order to get what he wants, Sadorski passes himself off to her as the head of a secret Gaullist network. He ropes the girl in as a “liaison agent,” giving her fake missions that he imagines are not too risky. He assumes this proximity will make her fall in love with him. But things do not happen exactly as Sadorski planned… they will go much worse.
