On the fiftieth anniversary of Algerian Independence, Éditions La Découverte (Paris) and Barzakh Editions (Algiers) have jointly and simultaneously decided to publish this collective essay on the history of Algeria under Colonial rule (1830-1962). This comprehensive book aimed at a wide readership focuses on a period that is little-known to others than experts but that proves essential in understanding the current situation in both countries and their relationship since the 1962 declaration of independence. Since Charles-André Julien and Charles-Robert Ageron’s groundbreaking essays and despite a wealth of publications, there didn’t exist until now a comprehensive review of this period, especially one taking into account the latest existing research. This book, written for the most part by historians (Algerian, French and of other nationalities), aims to provide readers with a shared history and a critical study of this historical period, with a special focus on current issues and their links to this past.
