They are unable to escape their fate, living in a place haunted by despair and consequently past conflicts and grief are rekindled. Temendous and uncomprimising, Philippe Besson's latest novel evokes this tense psychological relationship between two opposing characters; one son tormented by the memory of something lost and his father, a paragon of selfishness.
