I want to be useful

Every year, more than 3,500 adolescents under 25 are being diagnosed with cancer. It is on their behalf that Léa Moukanas, and thousands of adolescents with her, are challenging the limitations of our society and our health care system.
At 14, Léa has an epiphany: her grandmother is about to die of leukemia, yet she is prohibited from entering the hospital under the pretext that she is “too young”. When she finally gains access, she meets a lot of patients who are as young as she is. An idea... At 14, Léa has an epiphany: her grandmother is about to die of leukemia, yet she is prohibited from entering the hospital under the pretext that she is “too young”. When she finally gains access, she meets a lot of patients who are as young as she is. An idea comes naturally to her mind: she decides to create the organization Aïda (after her grandmothers given name) aiming to help hospitalized adolescents.
When you are young and you are ill, you are either lodged in the pediatric ward with the “babies” or in the adult ward with the “old people”. But a young person with an illness is above all an adolescent with all the needs and preoccupations characteristic of their age group. Aïda aims at supporting them during and after the treatment, but also at making a difference through information about prevention.
Seven years later, with the help of a permanent team of 25 members, Aïda has mobilized more than 80,000 students who are accompanying thousands of adolescents during her stay at over 50 hospitals throughout France.
This narrative is a poignant immersion into the daily life at a hospital. We meet Louise, who is helping Faustine to feel less alone during her treatment, Brandon, who shares his trials on TikTok to help others to face their illness, Abdoulaye who, between two treatments, succeeds in passing himself off as a volunteer, helping others on the floor below to make himself useful, or Reda, who writes letters to young hospital patients from her prison cell, and even star football player Benjamin Pavard, who is putting his world cup title in jeopardy over a game of table football in the hospital!
Welcome to the parallel universe of hospital life, where illness clings to adolescence, but without succeeding in extinguishing it. Faced with the challenges and the bravery of these youths, one only desire: to roll up our sleeves and get going!
