Brought up by an illiterate single mom working as a cleaner while taking care of her six other children, Amine Elbahi grows up in a ghetto of Roubaix, France’s poorest city. Due to his mother’s vigilance and his own devouring passion for football, the young boy stays on the right track, despite the recruitment efforts of radical Islamists and local thugs. Yet, in August 2014, disaster strikes the Elbahi family when his sister Leila leaves home to join the ranks of ISIS in Syria. The moment when he reports his sister’s flight to the police marks the start of his political engagement against radical Islamism. After publishing a tribune in the French left wing newspaper “Libération” in 2016, Amine Elbahi is noticed by Bruno Le Maire and joins the conservative party UMP. Struggling to find his place alongside the sons of the so called “good families” who never cease to snob and to shun him, Amine passionately advocates for a new approach in the fight against Islamic radicalization and terrorism. For him, this fight is above all a fight for the minds and souls of the young people left behind by our society. But these first efforts do not achieve the results he had hoped for: the Salafis’ influence in Roubaix is growing, niqabs and burkas are becoming ubiquitous and whole neighborhoods are being enfeoffed by the local Islamists. To challenge the preachers of hate who exploit the poor and the vulnerable, Amine successfully creates an association dedicated to helping people living on welfare.  In January 2022, he also shoots an episode of the popular television documentary series “Zone interdite” in which he openly averts to the dangers of Islamism, refusing to have his face and voice blurred or disguised. His riveting testimony shakes up the ongoing presidential campaign and is hailed by politicians of all parties – with the notable exception of the far left. But it also triggers an avalanche of menaces and death threats. Amine is placed under police protection but despite all threats, he continues to speak out in the media, hammering through his message that the expansion of the radical Islamist networks must be stopped and prevented at the same time through massive investments in educational and cultural reforms.
