On the evening of November 13th 2015, six locations in Saint-Denis and in Paris are attacked by Islamic terrorists in only half an hour. Outside the Stade de France, on the terraces of the bars and restaurants in the 10th and 11th arrondissement as well as inside the concert hall Bataclan, they kill 130 people and severely injure over a hundred more. At the sites of the first attacks, the police officers rushed to the scene can only assist the victims and secure the crime scenes. But at the Bataclan, two policemen belonging to a night unit still have to put an end to the massacre. They penetrate into the building and shoot at one of the perpetrators. Then comes the moment of the special units, foremost the Brigade of Search and Intervention (BRI), whose members secure the location, evacuate the survivors and free the last hostages by killing the terrorists.
Fifty police officers from different units and services speak out to give their version of the events of 11/13, of their perilous intervention, of the impact this evening has had on their lives as individuals as well as parts of a collective. This book shows and explains the reasons why, for these policemen and policewomen, this one night has changed everything about their professional identities, their emotions, their everyday lives, both privately and professionally, their relations to others, to their families, to the city and to the whole of society.
These testimonies originate from an unpublished corpus of interviews which has been realized in the context of the interdisciplinary scientific study “13th November” and regrouped under the name “Enquête 1000”, attributed after the number of interviewees.
