Marked by presentism and the climate catastrophe, our era obliges us to develop a different relationship with history and politics. This work suggests that, in this post-political era, politics could take the form of strategic governmentality, oriented towards big institutional planetary regulations and the capacity for invention and for breaking up local insurrections.

The first volume is made up of eleven historical, philosophical and political essays written between 2002 and 2019. Its French title is Histoire interminable referencing one of Freud’s last works (1937) revisited by Althusser in 1976. Following “the age of the extremes of historicity” (Hobsbawm), the challenge today is to confront “the end of history” based on two models. The first is the “regime of historicity”, a term appropriated by François Hartog but orientated towards the interlacing of social transformations and state or revolutionary politics which have reached the end of their historical cycle with the completion of capitalist globalization. The second model is the “regime of catastrophe” created by the alteration of our biological and planetary environment which, at the end of the twentieth century, reached the point of no return but whose social and civilizational consequences remain undetermined.
