Lili's Crazy Life: A Memoir

Release date : 11/04/2019
A Jewish child during World War II, the love of Chet Baker and muse of Paris’s jazz scene in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, then a discreet but prolific actress, Liliane Rovère’s life reads like that of a literary heroine.
Liliane Rovère was born in Paris in 1933. At a very young age, she knows the meaning of running away, hiding, and separation: she wore the yellow Star of David. At the end of the war, when she returns to the French capital, she encounters something that changes her life... Liliane Rovère was born in Paris in 1933. At a very young age, she knows the meaning of running away, hiding, and separation: she wore the yellow Star of David. At the end of the war, when she returns to the French capital, she encounters something that changes her life forever: jazz. “I was fifteen and a knockout, leaving school with books under my arm, heading straight for the Caveau de Lorientais. It was a basement, it was stylish; Claude Luther’s band played from 5 to 7 in the evening and it was packed. That was my first encounter with dixieland jazz.”
In 1955, her parents send her to live with an uncle in New York, hoping she’ll meet a nice American and get married. Having just arrived, she drops by Birdland, the city’s most famous jazz club. The romantic Chet Baker won’t leave the little French girl sitting alone at the bar. Liliane falls in love and follows him on his tours from one end of the United States to the other, then they cross the Atlantic together. Their love goes cold, but Liliane’s passion for jazz will never leave her. Even when she becomes an actress, shooting with directors like Bertrand Blier, Bertrand Tavernier, Emmanuel Finkiel and Robert Enrico and acting alongside the likes of Gerard Depardieu, Jean-Pierre Marielle, and Jean Rochefort, she continues to prefer her circle of musicians to those of the acting world. In 1956, she meets the double bass player Bibi Rovère, but their relationship is not an easy one. They adopt a daughter named Tina.
It is for herself and her two children that Liliane Rovère has now decided to write about her life, her crazy life. It is a jazzy life—strong, dynamic, improvised—with stories that make you laugh and cry in turn. Her daring is unbelievable and her energy is unstoppable. With Liliane Rovère, we will cross paths with Boris Vian, James Dean, Maria Casares, and Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, while all the great events of the 20th century play out in the background. She can currently be seen in the role of Arlette in the successful TV series Call My Agent!
