Born in 1975 in Saudi Arabia, Ensaf Haidar married with blogger Raif Badawi in 2001 – against her family’s will. Facing threats, in 2012, Raif, who advocated freedom of speech in his blog, required her to flee the country with their three children. He was then sentenced to 10 years in prison. She found political asylum in Sherbrooke, Canada. She was awarded the Sakharov Price for Freedom of thought in 2015. She then founded the Raif Badawi Foundation for Freedom in Québec. She is the author of Raif Badawi The Voice of Freedom. My Husband, Our Story (The Other Press, 2016; l’Archipel, 2016).
