Bénédicte Ferrière inherited the place through taking the trouble to send her aged aunt the occasional greeting card. But as a city-dweller at heart, she has no intention of spending much time there and indeed plans to sell it. Her husband Clément, who has been at a loss since losing his job, dreams of a new life. The splendour of the mountains could offer them and their two child a fresh start. After much hesitation, the family decides to embark on the adventure.

Encouraged by the warm welcome of the villagers, Bénédicte quickly and enthusiastically adjusts to her new existence. But soon Clément, in one of his habitual swings of mood, wearies of this harsh and austere way of life, while Bénédicte becomes strangely troubled by her neighbour Ivan, a master glazier with a passion for his profession who is also a secretive figure who disappears into the forest every day in the company of his two tamed wolves.

Through this attractive portrait of an authentic woman’s embrace of a splendidly wild region, Françoise Bourdin subtly explores contemporary themes such as unemployment and the exodus of people from the cities in search of a better standard of living.
