However, the next day, King Philip Augustus repudiates her and places her under the protection of Guilhem de Ventadour, a thundering giant, a troubadour knight wielding both the sword and the vielle. Thus a senseless love was born between the knight and the queen without a throne. Soon, the Pope, infuriated, demands from Philip Augustus that he takes back his wife. The refusal of the king insults the Pope further when he decides to remarry Agnes of Merania. In 1200, the pope applies an interdict to the kingdom of France: no more mass, churches closed to prayer, forbidden sacraments. After Agnes’s death, Philip brings Ingeburge back to him. Only to have her locked up in the fort of Etampes where she remains for thirteen long years suffering a lot of abuse. During all this time, Guilhem and Ingeburge draw nearer. Listening only to his heart, the knight betrays the king to join the prisoner. A short, romantic, passionate escape follows.
