He was shocked by the hasty mass exodus of thousands of French expatraites from China, and worried about the risk of contamination that could result.
He calls into question in an extremley virulent way the direct responsibiltiy of the Head of Satate in the tardy reaction to the pandemic, the state of sanitary inadequacy in the country, and the incoherency of the President’s speeches in introducing strict lockdown measures but allowing municipal elections to go ahead. He rebels against the misdemeanours and impact of the “liberal ideology” on public health policy and its weakening of our health system. Michel Onfray, as a fervent sovereignist, salutes the return to a more individualistic, nation-focussed political approach in the management of the crisis while globalisation seems to fail, and at the same time he is scathing of European impotence.
In what is akin to a war text, the author comes to the defense of Dr Raoult, with whom he had the oppurtunity to talk, supporting him against the Chinese, “pseudo-experts” and the media who were raging against him. Michel Onfray brings his philosophical approach to this book and his thinking on the virus. He recommends turning to Roman philosophers such as Plutarch and Marcus Aurelius as a way of surviving during lockdown, where silence and solitude can help us to find meaning in life.
