Can we fight against ourselves? Have our brains become our worst enemies?
The moment we live in is not just critical—it’s a a genuine tragedy. Overpopulation, obesity, overproduction, overconsumption, and a crippling debt—we have toppled into the era of too much, leading humanity straight to its downfall. Overpopulation, obesity, overproduction, overconsumption, and a crippling debt—we have toppled into the era of too much, leading humanity straight to its downfall. If the planet’s resources are limited, then so too are our days… it’s an unavoidable fact.
But while the situation worsens hour by hour, there has been no tangible collective response. We can see the wall coming towards us and we’re doing nothing about it. The knowledge of what awaits us does not seem to be having any effect on the course of events. But why?
Sébastien Bohler, a doctor in neuroscience and editor-in-chief of France’s leading neuroscience and psychology magazine, tackles the big question from a new perspective, one that’s both unsettling and original. For him, the main culprit is not mankind’s greed or our supposed ill-will, but rather, simply from a physiological standpoint, the very makeup of our brains. In the center of our brain is a little organ called the striatum that has controlled our behavior as long as our species has been on Earth. It has wired the human brain to pursue five goals whose objective is survival: eating, reproducing, acquiring power, extending our territory, and asserting our dominance over others. However, the striatum functions so well that it is constantly perfecting itself (and mankind has indeed proven to be the dominant mammal on the planet) and is always demanding more rewards for its work. Like a drug addict, it cannot master its own tendency towards excess. At no point does it try to restrain itself.
Yesterday our brains were our allies, allowing us to triumph over nature. Now, they have become our worst enemies.
