Despite the warnings of the spinners, Eulalie soon marries the mysterious Ectòr, before realizing too late that the latter was commissioned by the pastor to seduce her and take over the factory’s management. Eulalie becomes the hostage of an unhappy marriage. In 1914, Ectòr is sent to the battlefront. Eulalie, taking over the reins of the spinning mill, turns it into a collectivist enterprise. She and her companions host Arcadie and Zacharie, refugees from Roubaix, textile workers who share their social and political convictions. Against all odds, Eulalie, wounded by the failure of her marriage, is moved by Zacharie, who also bears both physical and psychological scars.
