8-year-old Hannah lives in “Little Istanbul”, a working-class neighborhood in Paris’s 11th arrondissement that brings together a cheerful and charming Judeo-Spanish community. Suzon, 9, a girl she meets on the street quickly becomes her best friend. But this is 1939, and Hannah and her family are Jews who emigrated from Turkey. Her picture-perfect life is about to change…

After her father volunteers to fight against the Germans, her mother sends her to a Catholic boarding school in Normandy to protect her from the growing threats. However, after the round-ups begin sweeping Paris, mother and daughter flee to Istanbul on a train reserved for Turkish nationals.

When Hannah and her mother return to Paris in 1945, everything has been destroyed, and loved ones are lost forever, including her father and grandparents.
