The Drop-outs

Release date : 25/08/2022
“I want to talk about ordinary people, about those who don’t evolve in school, and who are the big losers in this rigged game. Those who leave school too early, without a diploma, and who are going on to live the neither exceptional nor surprising life full of hardships that everyone knew they would have”.
Rachid Zerrouki has met those who leave the school system without a diploma: the drop-outs. Those who did not choose to quit, who describe their school career as a giant failure, and who now find themselves pedaling on a bike making deliveries or filling the shelves in a discount supermarket.

Rachid Zerrouki has met those who leave the school system without a diploma: the drop-outs. Those who did not choose to quit, who describe their school career as a giant failure, and who now find themselves pedaling on a bike making deliveries or filling the shelves in a discount supermarket.
Despite dropping out of school being one of the French state’s priority in 2010, more than 80,000 young French leave school each year without any qualification. Why? Where are the promised government schemes to detect, accompany and reintegrate these pupils? And what about the advertised training schemes, the schools of second chances and the myth of the happy quitter?
Through 8 poignant portraits, exemplifying each one major reason for dropping out of school, Rachid Zerrouki tries to understand the mechanisms and underlying societal reasons causing young pupils to quit: there is Renée, who stays on the farm to help instead of going to high school because she is a girl; there is Coralie, a highly sensitive girl who cannot cope with the daily hazing; there is Nahyl, for whose handicap the schools are not equipped for; or Seïf, who used to be a brilliant pupil in his native Meknès, but who does not speak the language of his new school…
This book is not about provoking pity or compassion, but righteous indignation and the desire for change. These stories have to be heard by school personnel and decision makers alike. They also will put a definitive end to the myth that effort is everything.
