Through 8 poignant portraits, exemplifying each one major reason for dropping out of school, Rachid Zerrouki tries to understand the mechanisms and underlying societal reasons causing young pupils to quit: there is Renée, who stays on the farm to help instead of going to high school because she is a girl; there is Coralie, a highly sensitive girl who cannot cope with the daily hazing; there is Nahyl, for whose handicap the schools are not equipped for; or Seïf, who used to be a brilliant pupil in his native Meknès, but who does not speak the language of his new school…
This book is not about provoking pity or compassion, but righteous indignation and the desire for change. These stories have to be heard by school personnel and decision makers alike. They also will put a definitive end to the myth that effort is everything.
