A book that treats academic difficulty with all the human complexity it deserves.

On the other hand, I had no idea what they would end up giving me in return: lessons from disheveled lives, lifelong memories, and a sense of meaning to my work.”

From 2016 to 2019, Rachid Zerrouki taught at a vocational secondary school in Marseille, where the students’ academic problems were too serious and persistent to continue with a traditional secondary education. Often, if not systematically, behind the curtain of these difficulties lies tragedy, instability, illnesses, and life trajectories marked by adversity and misfortune.
As he came alongside these teens on a daily basis, Rachid Zerrouki questioned his own education, ambitions, and convictions. The average vocational school student can often only read beginner chapter books, yet is mature enough for Pride and Prejudice. What can be done? Insult their intelligence or squander their confidence? And what balance can be found between strictness and openness with students whose emotional pain often affects their behavior? With this book, Rachid Zerrouki also hopes to share everything these students taught him. He takes us into the classroom to meet students like Sedrak, who came to France from Armenia at the age of 10 and lives in a car in a parking lot; or Sarah, who dreams of going to Algeria but has never left her neighborhood; or Jaïd, a ward of the state.
Unteachables is a useful, relevant book that brings a new perspective to social determinism and the role of schools in educating children and helping them through difficulties.
