A first book that is tender, innocent, heart-warming and triumphant. The beautiful story of a little sister who will always look up to her older brother, recounted through poignant memories of their lives.

He will always be her older brother. She will always worry about him with a love stronger than the usual bond that ties two siblings together. At too young an age, Anne’s mother tells her that Philippe is sick and will never get better; that Anne will have to take care of him. Anne doesn’t yet fully understand what this means but takes it to heart, for the rest of her life.

As Anne grows older she’ll come to understand that Philippe is mentally handicapped due to a complication at childbirth. She and her parents will forever be looking after him. In spite of the unconditional love and admiration she has for her brother, Anne can’t help but feel slightly burdened by being his caretaker, second only to their mother. She eventually realizes that this burden has stunted her own personal development for too long as she neglects her own needs and aspirations. She experiences a wide array of emotions – the shame of having a handicapped brother, followed by remorse and then pride. The regret of all that could have been evolves into the acceptance of what truly is.

Once Anne understands this, she takes her life back into her own hands, prepared to take care of not only Philippe, but herself as well.

The power of this work stems from its subject matter as well as from Anne Icart’s brilliant writing. Her tone is at once literary, at times poetic, while remaining true to the voice of a young girl.
