Arrested by the French Militia on January 8, 1944 for participating in the clandestine production of false identification papers, Raphaël Esrail was deported to Auschwitz. There, for eleven months, he experienced all the horror and abomination created by the Nazi: the headcounts to “register the movement of life towards death,” the blows dealt by the kapos, the arbitrary selections of prisoners to be sent to the gas chambers. Hunger, fear, despair… but also hope. Like the hope of finding Liliane, the woman whom he briefly meets during their common deportation and with whom he falls in love. Urged forward by his memory and the survival instinct that motivates each of the prisoners, the author endures his sentence in this hell “where life is always looking to hatch.”
