The Summer of the Four Kings

Release date : 30/08/2018
Camille Pascal leads us through a summer like no other in the
history of France, when four different kings each briefly sat on
the throne. A lush, intrigue-packed tale filled with the men and
women of letters and power who were eyewitnesses to the last
days of the French monarchy: Victor Hugo, Stendhal, Alexandre
Dumas, La Fayette, Thiers, Chateaubriand, the Duchess de Berry,
Madame Royale and more.

the “Three Glorious Days”.

In late July 1830, Charles X tried to pull off a non-militaristic coup d’état
by signing ordinances strictly limiting freedom of speech and more.
That led to the Parisian insurrection known as the July Revolution, or
the “Three Glorious Days”.
Those three days were enough to bring about the fall of the Bourbons’
restored monarchy, following the chain abdications of Charles X, his
son and grandson.
On August 9th, Louis-Philippe, who had agreed to rule as a
constitutional monarch, ascended to the throne. Thus began the July
Monarchy.
At the same time, Charles X and his family were taking a long, slow
journey through Normandy, one that would end in Cherbourg,
whence they sailed for England. To this day, no one truly understands
why their progression was so interminable. They advanced just a few
miles every day, and their flight would last until August 16.
Did the King find he enjoyed touring the country he had ruled but in
fact hardly knew? Did he wish to make his departure seem solemn
and stately rather than forced and hasty, or was he hoping for some
kind of reprieve?
