A strange war breaks out in the Sarthe at the hour of the Liberation due to an unexplained death, a small painting mysteriously hidden among the masterpieces of the Louvre, lords who jealously guard their family secrets, overly ambitious museum curators, and the settling of scores between real and fake resistance fighters.

An enormous fortress buried in the western countryside, so big that the Louvre Museum kept its large Rubens, David, and Courbet treasures there in 1940, away from the battleground…
They had to be recovered once the nation was liberated. Experts and curators were pressed for time. All of them desired to forget the previous five years. However, one of them is discovered dead with his head in a pond the day following a grandiose welcome ceremony. Then, like a calling card left at the scene of a crime, a painting—a small Dutch still life—reappears. The painting doesn’t appear to have any business being one of the huge formats at the Louvre. Who would have started it off? The targeted expert?
The war has not ended, most certainly. The nation is being scoured by new “cleansers.” A young curatorial assistant, a provincial who has previously failed, finds a future that he has not yet hoped for in this environment of latent civil conflict and disintegration. He only needs to manipulate the situation. Such an opportunity does not present itself twice in a lifetime.
