Pascal, a worker in a small town in the Ardennes, has always been proud of his son Louis, a calm, well-behaved boy who loves reading. In fact, Louis’s passion for literature borders on obsession, which is rather out of place among their small, uncultured circle.
Nathalie, Pascal’s ex-partner, was deemed incapable of being a mother just a few months after giving birth to Louis and left the day afterwards with no explanation. In spite of this tragedy, the father and son live a peaceful, happy life, each letting the other keep to themselves.
At least, this is what Pascal thinks, until the day when Louis’s body is found at the convergence of the Meuse and Semois rivers—the place where his son decided to commit suicide.
Stunned and overwhelmed, Pascal discovers the truth through a text on Louis’s phone. From one encounter to the next, it hits him in the face: he knew nothing about his son.
A penetrating novel about a lost relationship between a father and his son and the tenacious nature of social determinism.
