Alexandre & Sonia Poussin first walked the length of Africa in three years. Now they’re back with their two children, aged 6 and 9 at the start of the trek, to walk across a single country accompanied by a zebu-drawn cart. They will trek 3,096 miles around a magnificent country that, despite a wealth of natural resources, is one of the poorest in the world. The family’s adventures spread across the days and the miles, interspersed with encounters that uncover some of the mysteries and complexities of the Red Island.
Everyone said that walking around the entire country would be impossible. Yet thanks to the help of the Malagasy people, they cross huge rivers by floating their wagon and making their zebus swim; skirt around bandit-infested zones in makeshift boats; find their own way through mountain passes; cut through thorny brush with machetes; push their luck in the desert sands of the south; get bogged down in swamps and soaked by four rainy seasons...
What makes them keep going? Meeting missionaries, humanitarians, and CEOs lost in the bush trying to save their little corner of the world and their communities with projects to protect nature, highlight natural resources, or increase fair tourism. Not content with simply filming and documenting these initiatives, the Poussins worked to raise money for these projects through crowdfunding. They raised over 300,000 euros for thirty-three projects, and have continued fundraising upon their return to France.
