Even though its existence is denied by the State and a large part of the French public, the existence of a Corsican Mafia has become more and more evident although. Yet the discussion it has sparked ever since is far from being adequate to the challenges and dangers this criminal network poses to the whole country.
In early 2020, French magistrates specializing in organized crime have alerted the government of the existence of a Corsican Mafia, but to no avail. One year earlier, two new associations against the mafia had been founded in Corsica after the eruption of another wave of violence. Already in 2004, Jacques Follorou had started his inquiry into the Corsican mafia, analyzing how a form of organized crime was able to take control of a whole territory and its economy. In this new work, he addresses the most intricate part of the Corsican underbelly: the ties between thugs who have become political representatives. Almost never bothered by the justice system, this network, which was created in the 1980ies, is based on a regime of terror and is enforced by thugs who are well known, respected and legitimate members of society. Over and over, these thugs and their descendants have proven that opposing their interests comes with a heavy price tag, that everyone standing up against them has to fear for his life, thus creating and perpetuating an endless cycle of violence and oppression. It is these insidious and subtle mechanisms of power that Jacques Follorou has analyzed in all their ramifications to deliver a concise definition of the Corsican Mafia in this thrilling and innovative piece of investigative journalism.
