Fifteen teenagers are pupils at the Institut Mondial Mer à La Rochelle, a secondary school whose curriculum is centred around learning how to sail. After obtaining their baccalauréat, they set off with two experienced adults on a one-month crossing of the Atlantic bound for French Guiana. They sail on an old-fashioned sailing ship with three masts but equipped with modern technology should trouble arise.

And indeed they are caught in a terrible storm in the middle of the Atlantic - extremely violent winds and waves over ten metres high lash their ship. They send an SOS, but has it been heard?
When the storm abates, the eight shell-shocked survivors try to come to terms with the terrible reality. Help is dispatched from the mainland, but the planes patrolling the zone from where the SOS was broadcast are unable to find anything… The ship, or what remains of it, has drifted many leagues away and is now somewhere in the vast expanses of the southern seas.

The crew eventually make it ashore in an unknown and hostile land - the place is scattered with penguin eggs but infested by hornets… The eight survivors have to organise themselves and eke out their drinking water and food supplies. Their personalities emerge to the fore, so different from initial appearances. Amid love, hatred, jealousy, an instinct to survive and false hopes, the daily existence of these young sailors becomes a true ordeal…
