Fighting Islamism in France on the Municipal Level

Release date : 24/09/2020
For the first time, ten municipal politicians from France reveal their tumultuous experience battling Islamic fundamentalism, between threats and compromises from public authorities.
Cities across France are seeing the rapid development of a form of Islam that is at times intransigent and often radical. They are dominated by social housing and populated with immigrants or children of immigrants, the majority of whom are Muslim. Combined with a parallel economy, entire neighborhoods are closed... Cities across France are seeing the rapid development of a form of Islam that is at times intransigent and often radical. They are dominated by social housing and populated with immigrants or children of immigrants, the majority of whom are Muslim. Combined with a parallel economy, entire neighborhoods are closed off to the rest of the country!

In French cities like Trappes and Argenteuil, but also the edges of France, where certain groups intend to radicalize their villages and small towns, the problem is more long-term. But in Sarcelles, it is already peaking: after 40 years of growth, the city has lost 6% of its inhabitants in the last ten years. Violence, drugs, and fundamentalism form a cocktail that has sent people fleeing in search of new homes elsewhere.

Faced with this escalating situation, local elected officials from the suburbs of France’s large cities as well as its villages are walking on eggshells. From the Rhône to Île de France, Brittany and Hauts-de-France, whether members of En Marche, Les Républicains, the Parti Socialiste, or a party with more radical views, for the first time, ten of these officials reveal their experience with full transparency. They come from opposing parties and hold various municipal positions, but these brave men and women all share certain core republican values and must battle the tension between convictions and compromising behavior on a daily basis.

Between the rise of the Rassemblement National—the right-wing populist party formerly known as the Front National—and watchful but at times unreliable vigilance from anti-racist associations, between tough decisions and moderation, between genuine positions and electoral tactics, this book grapples with a highly-charged topic.
