Damien, forty-six, accepts a position as a health worker for a French embassy aid program in Africa. Many years earlier, in the same region, his father died in mysterious circumstances. In Paris, Damien's life is stagnating, dreary, solitary. Leaving the capital is for him a break, a way of forcing the future into being. And by attempting to discover the circumstances of his father's death, he hopes to awaken a silent part of himself which eludes and darkens him. While the narrow and racist spirit of his compatriots and the aberrations and inertia of the supposed aid program reinforce his isolation, he soon feels a sense of familiarity in Africa.
