Pierre Vidal-Naquet was, without a doubt, one of the greatest contemporary French historians. His career as a historian began with the Algerian war since when he has been constantly present and vigilant, positioning himself at the antipodes of the media posturing, which, today, is too often associated with intellectuals.
In 1994 at the age of fourteen, the young Pierre Vidal-Naquet saw his parents disappear forever, deported by the Gestapo to Auschwitz. His exceptional strength of spirit allowed him to transform that existential rupture into a compelling social commitment which remained with him till his death in 2006. A socially committed intellectual, he was, in equal measure, a great scholar, establishing himself as one of the eminent representatives of the school of historical anthropology who, alongside Jean-Pierre Vernant and Marcel Detienne in particular, cast new light on Ancient Greece.
Based on considerable documentation and dozens of original accounts by people who knew him, François Dosse reconstitutes this extraordinary career.
