Worry feeds economic and social statistics (especially growing inequalities), as well as fears incited by the rise of great political, geopolitical, and metapolitical challenges such as terrorism, the intensification of immigration processes, climate change… Of course, evidence can also be found to support the strength of democracy: at the start of the 2010s, the Arab Spring and movements like Occupy Wall Street and Spain’s 15-M; at the end of that same decade, the protests in Algeria, Sudan, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Chili, and Ecuador. After all, history does not run in a single direction. But it is clear that democracy today is extremely fragile.
As the winds of authoritarianism, extremism, hate, falsehood, and violence continue to blow, Michel Wieviorka demonstrates how and in what ways, if we agree that the human and social sciences need democracy, it also needs them, in order to benefit us all.
