~A terminally ill father wants to teach his son
not to fear his own death or death itself.
Right to the end, he wants to fulfill his role
and pass on his experience and love. He
urges his son not to cry, but instead to
reflect on death, to look it in the eye, and to
tame it. Despite being a doctor who has
always guarded a scientific approach to
death, and has never held religious beliefs,
he vows he is beginning to wonder
whether there is in fact a God. While death
sometimes seems absurd, after the natural
urge to fight has passed, it might be
possible to understand it, as demonstrated
in this poignant letter.
